BioStrong™: Follow Up Osteoporosis Trial- The Results
There is strong evidence that a high dosage of strontium is useful for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. For approximately 100 years, the West has used strontium in clinical settings and trials. Multiple clinical trails have demonstrated the value of this mineral. During the original five-year randomized controlled trials, the incidence of vertebral fractures was reduced by 35-38 percent compared to the placebo. Currently, there is a type of strontium called strontium ranelate, which is a licensed pharmaceutical drug in Europe.
Postmenopausal women, who were involved in the original trial, were invited to continue treatment for another five years. Originally, these women received 2g/d of strontium for five years as part of the Spinal Osteoporosis Therapeutic Intervention (SOTI) or the Treatment of Peripheral Osteoporosis (TROPOS) trials. In an open label trial, 223 women received:
- 2g/d of strontium ranelate
- 1g/d of calcium
- 400-800IU/d of vitamin D
Over the ten-year period, the trial showed lumbar bone mineral density had increased continuously with a 34.5 percent mean increase from the baseline. Also, to ten year period, the trial showed a 7.9 percent increase from year to year. The incidence of new fractures was significantly lower in people receiving strontium than in a matched control group who received the placebo during the initial five year studies and who were followed for an additional five years.
Although there is strong evidence that 2g a day of strontium is useful for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, for up to five years, the optimum length of treatment has not been established. Because there have been concerns of the side effects when using strontium ranelate, Health Concerns has made available a strontium and peperine combination known as BioStrong™. Currently, our recommendation is to use this formula for three years at two tablets per day, and then to take the formula at one tablet a day for an additional three years if desired. BioStrong™ should be taken on an empty stomach and apart from Calcium supplements.
Health Concerns also offers the formula OsteoHerbal™, which is a traditional Chinese herbal approach to osteoporosis.
For more information on our formulas, please refer to the Health Concerns Clinical Handbook.
